As the Spring flowers start to blossom, Stately Homes in the Lake District open their gardens to members of the public. As such, a package break in Windermere this May is the perfect time to visit. There are many historic houses and castles in Cumbria to choose from, here we take a brief look at some of our favourite.
Stately Homes in the Lake District
Muncaster Castle, Ravenglass
Starting with Muncaster Castle and one of the Lake Districts most popular tourist attractions. Now over 800 years old, the castle is full of history, myths and legends. Parts of the castle are said to be haunted, while elsewhere the grounds are home to the World Owl Centre. Its gardens are also among some of the most beautiful in the Lake District, covering over 700 acres.
Levens Hall, Kendal
Another of the stately homes in the Lake District popular in Spring is Levens Hall in Kendal. The gardeners are extremely proud of their award-winning topiary, which add to a fascinating walk through its grounds. Many visitors also include a visit to Levens Deer Park, where you will see Black Fallow Deer and Bagot Goats.
Holker Hall, Cork-in-Cartmel
Here’s a gem South of the Lakes at Holker Hall. Cork-in-Cartmel is easy to reach from Windermere and home to another of our stately homes in the Lake District. It’s the family residence of Lord and Lady Cavendish, however, the business side of things is now run by a younger generation. Which, in turn, has opened the doors to a wider range of visitors.
Brantwood, Coniston
One of the Lake Districts many famous residents, John Ruskin, lived at Brantwood. He was a man known for being both artist and critic, social thinker and philanthropist. The house includes the popular Ruskin Museum, while also provides some breath-taking views overlooking Coniston Old Man and out across the water.
Mirehouse Keswick
The grounds alone make Mirehouse in Keswick one of the best stately homes in the Lake District. Covering the distance from Dodd Wood to Bassenthwaite Lake, they certainly do their bit for the local flora and fauna. You can quite literally get lost during your package break in the Lake District too, given it includes heather maze.
Blackwell, Bowness-on-Windemere
One of the stately homes in the Lake District a little closer to our Windermere Boutique Spa Suites is that of Blackwell. If you’re after things to do in Windermere without a car, then Blackwell is only a 20-minute walk from your spa suite. Built at the tail end of the 1890’s it’s a fairly modern building by comparison to previous suggestions.
