Things to do in Windermere during the Winter
It may be the start of a new year, but the cold weather has certainly stayed with us. While the Lake Districts may attract 1000’s of tourists during the summer months, there’s still plenty to see and do during quieter seasons. If you’re looking for things to do in Windermere during the winter, then here are just a few suggestions.
The World of Beatrix Potter
The author Beatrix Potter is responsible for writing some timeless classics, probably her most famous work being the adventures of Peter Rabbit. It’s not just for children though, as many grown ups are fond of these childhood memories. At the World of Beatrix Potter, look out for Mrs Tiggy-winkle’s Kitchen, Mr. Jeremy Fisher on his lily-pad boat and Mr McGregor’s Greenhouse.
The Fun Factory
Even if it’s cold and wet outside, children can run around no matter what the weather in the Fun Factory. The soft play area is safe and secure, with slides, ball pits and climbing frames. If you’re looking to hire somewhere for a child’s party, then they can cater for that too.
Lakes Aquarium
If you don’t want to get wet, then let the waters of the Lake District come to you at the Lakes Aquarium. You will marvel at all the sea life as you walk through the underwater tunnel or make some new friends when you meet the otters.
The Royalty Cinema
With smaller cinemas being closed down in favour of modern, multi-screen complexes the likes of the Royalty Cinema in Windermere are slowly becoming a unique experience. This one even still has its own Wurlitzer organ.
Windermere Jetty
This may be one to keep an eye out for in the future, but following the closure of Windermere Steamboat Museum, the Windermere Jetty is set to soon carry on the good work. It bridges the gap between being on dry land and seeing some historical boats brought back to life.
Rydal Mount
For fans of poet William Wordsworth, head to Rydal Mount in the heart of the Lake District. Enjoy a cream tea as you overlook Bowness-on-Windermere.
Honister Slate Mines
With most of this attraction being underground, it’s an ideal place to visit in the Lake District when it’s not looking so good above ground. The short trip to Honister Slate Mines is just a bus ticket away.
Hike in the mountains
For those wishing to embrace the colder months, then you can still go for a hike in the mountains – just remember to wrap up warm, tread carefully.
Boat Tours
Likewise bad weather doesn’t mean the boat tours strop running, although in extreme weather conditions it makes sense to double check in advance.
Spa Treatment
If it all gets too much, then there’s always time to treat yourself. Indulge in a pamper session, treat yourself to a spa weekend or just find a hot tub to sit in and relax for an hour or two.
